Feasibility of interstitial diffuse optical tomography using cylindrical diffusing fibers for prostate PDT

Abstract: Interstitial diffuse optical tomography (DOT) has been used to characterize spatial distribution of optical properties for prostate photodynamic therapy (PDT) dosimetry. We have developed an interstitial DOT method using cylindrical diffuse fibers (CDFs) as light sources, so that the same light sources can be used for both DOT measurement and PDT treatment. In this novel interstitial CDF-DOT method, absolute light fluence per source strength (in unit of 1/cm2) is used to separate absorption and scattering coef… Show more

“…However, implementing such a model in a Treatment Planning System (TPS) remains complicated since it requires many preliminary steps (optimized meshes, light source areas definition) to obtain significant results. Another model of light transport, known as the analytics methods, stems from the steady‐state solution of the wave propagation equation . The simplicity of implementation and short time computing make them particularly interesting for routine clinical applications and TPS implementation.…”

“…One example of this is the use by Liang et al (2013) of existing cylindrical diffusing fibers (currently used for diffuse optical tomography) as a light source for PDT inside a phantom prostate. The study does mostly focus on the use of PDT for anticancer purposes, but the use of such techniques to deliver light to otherwise difficult to illuminate tissues is intriguing.…”
