Feasibility of population health analytics and data visualization for decision support in the infectious diseases domain

Abstract: A population database has great potential for reducing complexity and uncertainty in medicine to improve clinical care. The preferences identified for the population information display will guide future health information technology system designers for better and more intuitive display.

“…By incorporating family medication history along with PGx data, both HCPs and patients will be equipped with more knowledge to determine the most appropriate therapy. More specifically, an advanced CDS system that can leverage the shared family PGx data may have the capability to adequately support providers and patients in shared decision-making [ 30 , 41 ]. As discussed above, patients indicate that they are not only willing to share results with providers but with family members as well.…”

“…As PGx becomes more widely accessible, it is important that patients share results with family members in order to effectively identify individuals that are at risk for adverse drug events or medication failures. Also, with the increasing complexity of patients’ data from discrete sources, it is imperative to integrate family PGx data to optimize therapy outcomes for family members [ 30 33 ].…”

“…HTA is used to understand cognitive task complexity when patients interact with the PPI information and how they would manage these tasks [11,26,27]. To carry out a task to find information, the operator has to go through a logical information scent [28].…”

“…Innovative interactive visualizations, such as infographics, have been frequently used to deliver health information due to their ability to present complex data in a simple and clear manner [9,10]. Presenting PPI information using interactive visualization can actively engage patients to reduce information avoidance due to a sense of perceived familiarity and empower patients to retain more information [11].…”

“…2427 The construction, validation, and evaluation of the prediction models embedded in population decision support is needed as such tools have the potential to assist clinicians by providing them a high-level view of possible scenarios and probabilities associated with a case, thereby reducing anchoring bias. 28 Future research on creating a better predictive model using population data may improve the overall sensitivity and specificity of the model for clinical use.…”
