Feasibility of using cigarette butts waste in eco-friendly ceramic roofing tile

Abstract: Cigarette butt is a hazardous solid waste produced in large amounts worldwide, and its improper disposal has been becoming a critical and urgent issue. This work investigates the incorporation of cigarette butt waste as an alternative raw material into an industrial roofing tile body, in replacement to natural roofing tile body by up to 5 wt.%. Roofing tile formulations containing cigarette butt waste were pressed and sintered at 1100 °C. The technical properties of the ceramic roofing tile pieces, including l… Show more

“…Furthermore, in the wake of an ever-growing sensitivity to environmental issues (Rajesh, 2018(Rajesh, , 2020, the World Health Organization declared cigarette butts littering to be a landfill hazard, promoting several initiatives to find a reuse for the cigarette butts that are infesting the world's streets and landfills. For instance, cigarette butts could be used as fibre modifier in bitumen for asphalt concrete (Rahman et al, 2020), as a precursor for the preparation of mosquito pesticides and as tools for malaria vector management (Murugan et al, 2018), or as an eco-friendly row material in ceramic roofing tile (Maciel et al, 2020). If cigarette butts were collected separately, they could be recycled, and this aspect would have a positive impact on the environment.…”

“…However, in recent years, an innovative approach has emerged, utilizing ceramic bricks to mitigate the environmental impact of cigarette waste. By incorporating cigarette waste into the ceramic brick production process, novel solutions are being developed to address waste management concerns while minimizing the harm caused by discarded cigarettes [7][8][9]. Cigarette smoking has been a common habit for centuries, with its popularity reaching alarming levels around the world.…”
