Features of a drive system for pump-storage plant applications based on the use of double-fed induction machine with a multistage-multilevel frequency converter

Abstract: the paper presents the modeling and simulation study of a variable speed pump-storage power plant composed of a reversible turbine, a doubly fed induction machine (DFIM), and a multistage-multilevel frequency converter. The DFIM rotor circuit is fed by a 5-level NPC VSI. The inverter DC-link capacitor voltages are kept in balance by means of four multistage PWM rectifiers. The paper considers start-up responses and performance characteristics of the drive system along with its behavior under the stator short-c… Show more

“…The AM control system description is given in a number of papers [9]- [11]. The difference of the control system under consideration is in the fact that the required power is provided by two AM regulators -the GV turbine inertial control (affecting the shaft torque) and practically non-inertia rotor acceleration control (the set AM rotor slip is formed by integrating the acceleration).…”

“…The Vsc offers many advantages compared to the classical cycloconverter solution, as noted in [1], [6], [16], [18], and [33]: a simpler structure, the ability to regulate reactive power (the cycloconverter absorbs reactive power, making compensation necessary), an improved ability to control the machine during faults, no need for an additional frequency converter during startup, and a much lower total harmonic distortion. In terms of power electronic devices, both transistor-and thyristor-based equipment can be used [6], [48]. The latter-e.g., integrated gate-commutated thyristors (IGcTs)-is claimed to be best suited for high-power applications [20], [23], [38], [49].…”

“…A study in [5] shows that the variable speed pumped storage (VSPS) system can improve the steady state operations and dynamic stability of the power system. Having dependable features, the VSPS plant can play a key role in stabilizing the dynamics and transients of the grid affected by wind power fluctuations and other contingencies [6][7][8][9][10][11].…”
