Fecal calprotectin in children with familial Mediterranean fever in the attack‐free period

Abstract: Background Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by recurrent episodes of fever and serosal inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate fecal calprotectin (FC) in children with FMF during the non‐attack period. Methods A retrospective evaluation was made of the data of a total 66 patients diagnosed with FMF in an attack‐free period and without amyloidosis or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). FC level in the FMF patients was compared with that in the patients… Show more

“…High level of FMF may be due to chronic inflammation in FMF patients. Another study by Fatma et al concluded that FC is noninvasive simple method for assessing inflammation in childern with FMF patients [22]. The Study limitations were a relatively low number of patients and that it was crosssectional.…”

“…The literature supports this data. Not only IBDs are associated with high fecal calprotectin levels, but also other NI fevers such as the familial Mediterranean fever show a similar trend [51]. Finally, the autoimmunity assay was reserved for patients in whom there was a high clinical suspicion of autoimmune disease; ANA and anti-cardiolipin positivity was correlated to NI fever.…”

“…Demirbas et al evaluated faecal calprotectin in children with FMF during the non-attack period and also reported that faecal calprotectin was higher in FMF patients than in healthy children. 18 However, plasma calprotectin in patients with attacks has not yet been studied. We believe that our findings have taken steps forward by evaluating FMF patients during both attack and attack-free periods.…”
