Fecal Microbiota Transplantation: A New Therapeutic Attempt from the Gut to the Brain

Abstract: Gut dysbacteriosis is closely related to various intestinal and extraintestinal diseases. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a biological therapy that entails transferring the gut microbiota from healthy individuals to patients in order to reconstruct the intestinal microflora in the latter. It has been proved to be an effective treatment for recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. Studies show that the gut microbiota plays an important role in the pathophysiology of neurological and psychiatric diso… Show more

“…In this study, we assessed the effect of PS128 on the icv-STZ-treated 3 × Tg-AD model and showed that longterm supplementation with PS128 prevented cognitive dysfunction induced by icv-STZ in the 3 × Tg-AD male mice. The beneficial effects of PS128 supplementation on attenuating cognitive deficits were consistent with many other probiotic studies [14,[64][65][66][67]. Therefore, we suggest that PS128 supplementation is safe and has the potential to prevent cognitive dysfunction in individuals with AD.…”

“…Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) enables the gut microbiota composition to be reconstructed; it is a transfer of gut microbiota from a healthy individual to a patient suffering from a certain disease. FMT has proved to have be effective in recurrent Clostridium difficile infection [ 79 ]. So far, only one case of a 36-year-old male patient suffering from severe plaque psoriasis for 10 years as well as inflammatory bowel disease for 15 years who had undergone two FMTs five weeks apart has been described in China.…”

“…In conclusion, although our results indicate that prolonged dietary intervention with polyphenol enriched nutritional regimes does not significantly impact the offspring microbiota, we observed significant dysbiosis reduction mainly at weaning time, indicating that the reduction of mothers’ dysbiosis may beneficially affect babies’ microbiota and help preventing/reducing IBD development. Nutrition should become a common adjuvant therapy for dysbiosis mediated inflammatory disorders that may evolve in intestinal or extraintestinal disorders ( Ianiro et al., 2020 ; De Santis et al., 2021 ; Xu et al., 2021 ). Based on these results, the present study can contribute to pave the way for future studies based on nutritional interventions designed for IBD mothers.…”
