Fecal microbiota transplantation in non-communicable diseases: Recent advances and protocols

Abstract: Fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is a therapeutic method that aims to restore normal gut microbial composition in recipients. Currently, FMT is approved in the USA to treat recurrent and refractory Clostridioides difficile infection and has been shown to have great efficacy. As such, significant research has been directed toward understanding the potential role of FMT in other conditions associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, neuropsychiatric di… Show more

“…Furthermore, healthcare providers lack knowledge about FMT, necessitating ongoing education [ 22 ]. FMT is also being investigated for treating non-communicable conditions like obesity, diabetes, neuropsychiatric disorders, and more [ 23 ], suggesting its expanding use. In summary, FMT integration into CDI management has transformed treatment and spurred innovation in live bacterial products [ 13 ].…”

“…Fecal microbiota transplantation has recently become a novel method for modulating the gut microbiota in gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel syndrome and CDI [ 178 , 179 ], and non-gastrointestinal diseases including neuropsychiatric disorders [ 180 , 181 ]. Fecal microbiota transplantation is a method of directly restoring healthy gut bacteria by transferring stool from a healthy donor.…”

“…Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is a new treatment for inflammatory bowel disease. FMT is now widely believed to be the transplantation of feces from healthy individuals to the intestinal tract of patients, so as to achieve the purpose of treating diseases by improving and rebuilding the gut microbiota (Hamamah et al, 2022). A previous study demonstrated that the transplantation of fecal flora of healthy mice and Lactobacillus could improve the gut microbiota structure and restore emotional cycle in letrozole induced PCOS rats (Guo et al, 2016).…”
