Fecundity and reproductive habits in Patagonotothen tessellata (Richardson, 1845) from the Beagle Channel, Argentina

Abstract: Population fecundity and reproductive habits in Patagonotothen tessellata were established for each reproductive period during 1988 and 1989. Fecundity/total length and fecundity/total weight relationships were analysed through regression models. Fecundity was positively correlated with fish length and weight. Mean fecundity was 25932 eggs (range 7634–62033). The regressions for each reproductive period are similar, suggesting that the amount of energy allocated to reproduction does not vary between spawning p… Show more

“…Egg-guarding behaviour (commonly fanning of eggs and aggression towards intruders) has been reported previously in just a few notothenioids. These include Harpagifer species, in which either or both sexes may be involved (Daniels 1978), the Antarctic nototheniid Lepidonotothen nudifrons (Hourigan & Radkte 1989), and the non-Antarctic nototheniid Patagonotothen tessellata (Rae & Calvo 1995). Additionally, egg-guarding behaviour has been observed in the channichthyid Chaenocephalus aceratus from near Bouvet Island by participants in ICEFISH 2004 (Eastman, personal communication 2005).…”

“…Each male guards egg masses spawned by several females in nests under flat rocks in lower levels of the intertidal zone of the Beagle Channel. Female P. tessellata spawn 7600-62,000 oocytes with a diameter of 1000 to 1500 µm (Rae and Calvo, 1995;. P. cornucola has not specifically been studied but preliminary observations indicate a similar timing of spawning (unpubl.…”

“…This suggests egg brooding in both species. Parental care has also been observed in a Patagonian nototheniid, Patagonotothen tessellata Richardson (Rae & Calvo 1995).…”
