Fecundity Variation and Abundance of Female Blue Crabs Callinectes Sapidus Rathbun, 1896 (Decapoda, Brachyura, Portunidae) in the Patos Lagoon Estuary, Rs, Brazil

Show more

“…The same process could be responsible for C . sapidus larval transport between these areas, since blue crab females lay eggs in the open ocean from the end of spring to autumn [ 52 ]. This could explain the large number of migrants from Laguna to Tramandaí (see Fig 3 ).…”

“…Rodrigues et al . [ 52 ] found ovigerous females at the Lagoa dos Patos mouth at the end of spring, during summer, and in autumn. Considering the larval phase duration of this species, it is possible to infer that during winter the Lagoa dos Patos plume transports C .…”

“…Blue crab preference for areas with higher salinity is related to lower energy expenditure 3 . Salinity variation influences the distribution and abundance of the species with segregation by sex and size 3,33,19,34,35 . Variations in the abundance of individuals due to the search for food, growth, survival, and protection against intraspecies competition must also be considered 15,16,19 .…”

“…The highest zoeal abundance of C. sapidus during summer was due to a greater abundance of ovigerous females with eggs in all of the developmental stages (Rodrigues et al, 2011). Zoeae caught in one site of the coastal region in early autumn were from ovigerous females from late summer.…”
