Feeding a diet contaminated with ochratoxin A for broiler chickens at the maximum level recommended by the EU for poultry feeds (0.1 mg/kg). 2. Effects on meat quality, oxidative stress, residues and histological traits

Abstract: SummaryThe European Commission Recommendation 2006/576/EC indicates that the maximum tolerable level of ochratoxin A (OTA) in poultry feeds is 0.1 mg OTA/kg. Thirty-six 1-day-old male broiler chicks were divided into two groups, a control (basal diet) and an OTA (basal diet + 0.1 mg OTA/kg) group. The OTA concentration was quantified in serum, liver, kidney, breast and thigh samples. The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) content were evaluated in the liver, kidney, breast and thigh samples. The g… Show more

“…Moreover, the OTA‐treated chickens showed a lower absolute spleen weight. These findings are in accordance with the histopathological observations presented in Part 2 of the present study (Pozzo et al., ) that showed an increase in apoptosis in the splenic follicles of OTA‐treated chickens. It is known that the immunosuppressant activity of OTA is characterized by a reduction in size of the vital immune organs (Al‐anati and Petzinger, ).…”

“…In the study of Pozzo et al, OTA residues were detected in kidneys (3.58 ng/g) and liver (1.92 ng/g) of broiler chickens receiving OTA contaminated mixtures in the amount of 0.1 mg/kg [ 33 ]. Similar results were obtained in other studies [ 34 , 35 ].…”

“…Young chickens are more susceptible to the trans-epithelium migration of pathogens [ 22 ]. Usually, liver and kidney damage are linked to aflatoxin [ 48 ] and ochratoxin A [ 49 ] exposure. However, neither of these mycotoxins was detected in the diets.…”
