Feeding ecology of thirteen syntopic species of anurans in a seasonal tropical environment

Abstract: Thirteen species of anurans belonging to three families forage diurnally for arthropods in the leaf litter of the lowland rainforest at the Río Llullapichis in Amazonian Perú. This paper investigates the diets and patterns of coexistence in this group of ecologically similar species. All thirteen species use the forest floor habitat without apparent differentiation. Most species take prey in proportions significantly different from those occurring in the leaf litter and comprise two specialist guilds: dendroba… Show more

“…Seasonal changes in body condition of both uninfected and infected frogs were probably caused by changes in energy acquisition or expenditure. Reduced energy intake could be associated with low availability of rainforest arthropods during dry months [56], which can affect the diets of frogs [57]. The strongly reduced body condition of infected frogs in winter could also be related to greater infection loads caused by faster growth rates of B. dendrobatidis under cooler temperatures [58].…”

“…Another characteristic of frogs is that they are gapelimited (Toft 1980), i.e. the body size and width of the mouth determine their feeding habits (Toft 1980;Houston 1987).…”
