This study assessed the feeding habits and ingestion of anthropogenic debris in 34 marine fish species from the southern Gulf of Thailand. A total of 5478 fish samples of 12 families were categorised into seven groups: planktivore, Lucifer feeder, fish feeder, Acetes feeder, shrimp feeder, piscivore, and zoobenthivore fish. A total of 2477 anthropogenic debris items were extracted from 12 fish species by visual inspection. Their ingestion of anthropogenic debris was influenced by season (p < 0.0001), with the highest ingestion during the northeast monsoon season. Furthermore, planktivorous fish displayed more ingested anthropogenic debris than the other investigated species (p = 0.022). Blue-coloured anthropogenic debris was commonly detected in the stomachs of fish and significantly differed between species (p > 0.001). Water depth and season significantly influenced the availability of food types (AF) for fish (p < 0.001). These findings provide evidence of the ingestion of anthropogenic debris by fish inhabiting a natural bay and signal the future anthropogenic pollution of marine fish.

This study investigates reproductive traits of the hermaphroditic four-finger threadfin, Eleutheronema tetradactylum, along the coasts of Thailand during January 2021 and January 2022. Fish sample from Pattani Bay, Thailand was collected to assess sex ratio, gonadosomatic index (GSI), maturity stage and fecundity. Additional samples from other provinces were used to investigate length and weight at first sex change (Ls50 and Ws50) and length at first maturity (Lm50). It was found that the overall sex ratio for male and female was 1:0.69 with male predominated throughout the year. This fish spawned the whole year round with peak during moderate rainy season. Results from histological examination confirmed its protandrous hermaphrodite posing multiple spawning behavior. The average fecundity was 1.85 x 105 ± 1.05 x 105 eggs and positively related with standard length, body weight, gonad weight and egg diameter (P < 0.05). The Ls50 and Ws50 for fishes from Pattani Bay and Samut Prakan province were 27.58 cm, 419.39 g and 29.71 cm, 457.28 g, respectively. The Lm50 of male from Pattani Bay and Samut Prakan were 25.78 cm and 25.56 cm, respectively, considered larger than those from Satun and Nakhon Sri Thammarat provinces. The Lm50 of female from Pattani Bay was slightly smaller than that of Samut Prakan province. This study provides fundamental information on the reproductive characteristics of E. tetradactylum and can be implemented for both management of natural fish stock and future aquaculture development.

Human activities, such as urbanization, can cause instability in the aquatic biota. This instability can modify aquatic food resource availability, consequently shifting the diet composition of fish. Because the diet consumed by fish closely affects the anatomy of their digestive tract, it can also alter their intestinal coefficient. In this study, we analyzed the diet composition, condition factor and intestinal coefficient of Astyanax lineatus (Perugia, 1891) from two distinct habitats: a "degraded habitat" (Cabaça stream) in a reserve inside the city perimeter and a "preserved habitat" (Salobra River) in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Central Brazil. We found a total of 15 food items, all of which were found in the urban stream, with a predominance of detritus and Chironomidae larvae, and six in the natural area, with a predominance of plant remains. There was a distinct difference in diet composition between fishes in the two areas (p < 0.05, PERMANOVA); however, there was no significant difference in inter-individual variability. The most frequent food items were detritus in the "degraded habitat", while in the "preserved habitat" plant and insect remains were most frequent. The relative condition factor measured by the fish's length-weight relationship was not significantly different between the two habitats. The intestinal coefficient was significantly different between the individuals from each habitat, and it was longer in fish from the natural habitat. Therefore, even though A. lineatus is known to be a generalist species, its feeding plasticity depends on the ecological integrity of the two types of habitats.
