Feeding habits of Chironomid larvae (Insecta: Diptera) from a stream in the Floresta da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: Chironomids larvae are frequently one of the most abundant and diverse groups of insects in several kinds of aquatic environments. Also, they play a major role in the aquatic food webs, representing a major link among producers and secondary consumers. This work investigates the feeding behavior of the chironomid larvae present in the Rio da Fazenda, situated in the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between August 1994 and May 1995. Algae, fungi, pollen, leaf and wood fragments, animal remains… Show more

“…As has been pointed out by some authors (NESSIMIAN & SANSEVERINO 1998, NESSIMIAN et al 1999, HENRIQUES-OLIVEIRA et al 2003, MOTTA & UIEDA 2004, this family shows a wide diet variation with genera belonging to different trophic groups. Because of this high diet flexibility it would be necessary to identify Chironomidae larvae until genera level for a correct diet analysis.…”

“…Fine particulate organic matter (FPOM) is the main food item used by chironomids, but always associated with other food resources (HENRIQUES-OLIVEIRA et al 2003, MOTTA & UIEDA 2004, CALLISTO et al 2007, SANSEVERINO & NESSIMIAN 2008, SILVA et al 2008. However, it is important to recognize that chironomids, such as most aquatic insects, are not limited to a single feeding strategy (MOTTA & UIEDA 2004).…”

“…In addition, leaf decomposition to fine detritus in warm tropical streams is fast (Mathuriau & Chauvet, 2002;Dobson et al, 2002) and continuous throughout the year. Hence, the occurrence of this food item in the guts contents would be mainly due to its high availability in the habitat (Henriques-Oliveira et al, 2003) rather than to feeding specialization. Indeed, a community dominated by taxa with high affinity Tab.…”

“…The production of detritus is more intense in tropical lentic ecosystems, which are characterized by high temperatures and high availability of nutrients (Bianchini 2007). A large amount of detritus is consumed by larvae of the family Chironomidae (Henriques-Oliveira et al 2003;Silveira et al 2013;Saito and Fonseca-Gessner 2014), which consists mostly of omnivorous species (Berg 1995;Galizzi et al 2012).…”
