RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a ocorrência dos sintomas de disfagia em crianças com fissura labial e/ou palatina pré e pós-correção cirúrgica. Método Trata-se de um estudo observacional do tipo transversal, de caráter quantitativo. Os critérios de inclusão e/ou exclusão foram de portadores de fissura labial e/ou palatina, sem outras síndromes associadas. Os responsáveis responderam a um questionário com questões de caráter recordatório quanto à identificação de ocorrência dos sinais e sintomas: tosse, engasgo, vômito e escape nasal no momento pré-correção cirúrgica, e o seu desaparecimento ou não, pós-correção cirúrgica. Este estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa sob o protocolo número 1573164. Resultados Amostra composta por 23 crianças com idade mediana de 48 meses, sendo a maioria do gênero masculino e portadora de fissura transforame incisivo unilateral. Houve diferença estatística da presença de sintomas de disfagia entre o momento pré e pós-cirúrgico. Conclusão A correção cirúrgica dos portadores de FLP se mostrou um recurso de prevenção da ocorrência dos sintomas de disfagia, quando associada ao tempo adequado da cronologia de intervenção.

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the age at which puberty begins, age of menarche and anthropometric data of the participants at different stages of puberty. Subjects and me thods: This is a cross-sectional study in which we evaluated 665 girls, a sample representing the female schoolchildren population in Uberaba. Results: We found that thelarche, pubarche, underarm hair and menarche were attained at the age of 9.8 ± 1.4, 10.2 ± 1.4, 10.5 ± 1.5 and 11.7 ± 1.3 years, respectively. The mean interval between thelarche and menarche (ITM) was 1.7 ± 1.3 years. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 31.3% and 95% of the participants began at thelarche between the age of 7 and 12 years. Conclusion: These values indicate a secular tendency to the decrease of the age of menarche and an earlier start of puberty. It is very important to understand these parameters to establish public policies aimed at plans to prevent these early events, especially regarding control of the prevalence of obesity. Background/Aims: This pilot study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of oral habits and non-nutritive sucking habits in children with cleft (lip and) palate (CL/P) between 0–12 years, compared to peers without CL/P. Methods: Children with CL/P (mean age 6.0 years, SD 2.80) were recruited from the Ghent University Hospital and compared to gender- and age-matched children without CL/P (mean age 5.8 years, SD 3.09). A self-report questionnaire was developed and given to the caregivers. To compare the occurrence of oral habits and non-nutritive sucking habits in children with and without CL/P, χ² tests or Fisher’s exact tests were used. Results: The present study revealed a significantly lower occurrence of non-nutritive sucking habits in children with CL/P. These children showed significantly less pacifier sucking; no significant difference was found regarding thumb or finger sucking nor regarding sucking on other objects. Additionally, the results showed that the occurrence of snoring was statistically significantly higher in children with CL/P. Conclusion: Children with CL/P show less non-nutritive sucking habits, but more snoring compared to a control group without CL/P. Although further research regarding the oral habits in children with CL/P is necessary, cleft teams should give attention to the occurrence of oral habits.
