“…Green food remains and algae have been found in the gut of several marine fish larvae collected from the sea (Lebour, 1919;Berner, 1959;Last, 1978aLast, , 6, 1979 including cod larvae (Wiborg, 1948;Nordeng & Bratland, 1971;Bainbridge & McKay, 1968;Last, 19786;Kane, 1984). The gut of cod larvae sampled from successful rearing experiments in lagoons contained an unidentified green mushy mass (Kvenseth & IZliestad, 1984).…”

“…A great number of first-feeding larvae had phytoplankton in their guts in April. This is a common fmding in small larvae (Nordeng and Bratland, 1971;Ellertsen et al, 1980). Among the zooplankton prey group, copepod eggs (presumably Calanus finmarchicus eggs) were by far the most important food item for first-feeding cod larvae.…”

“…The ingestion of unicellular algae by the larvae of marine fish is well documented, both from field studies (Lebour, 1919;Wiborg, 1948;Berner, 1959;Bainbridge & McKay, 1968;Nordeng & Bratland, 1971;Last, 1978aLast, ,b, 1979Kane, 1984;Kvenseth & Øiestad, 1984) and observations in the laboratory (Lasker et al, 1970;Scura & Jerde, 1977;Ellertsen et al, 1980;Moffatt, 1981;van der Meeren, 1991;Lein & Holmefjord, 1992;Reitan et al, 1994). Both van der Meeren (1991) and Reitan et al (1994) concluded from their measurement of ingestion rates, that the accumulation of algae in the guts of the larvae of cod Gadus morhua L., and halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L.), was two to three orders of magnitude higher than predicted from passive uptake by drinking.…”
