Feedstock Recycling via Waste Plastic Pyrolysis

Abstract: Plastics are essential materials for various products such as packaging and containers, electrical and electronic equipment, and automobiles. Japanese production of polymers was reported as 10.6 million t in 2014 1) , with the majority prepared from finite fossil resources. Currently, in excess of 150 and 200 different types of polymers and additives, respectively, are produced and distributed within Japan 2 ) . Metals and fillers are further mixed with these products to achieve the desired properties, giving … Show more

“…Pyrolysis (catalytic and thermal) is a low-cost process that cleaves various chemical bonds in polymers and additives using high temperatures in the absence of oxygen, avoiding the use of solvents. The PET pyrolysis results in terephthalic acid (TPA), benzoic acid (BA), and carbon residues (Kumagai and Yoshioka, 2016; Figure 10B). While thermal pyrolysis is not very selective, catalytic pyrolysis is used to increase selectivity (Almeida and De Fátima Marques, 2016).…”

“…Therefore, the independent pyrolysis of wood and plastic could theoretically be realised by temperature control, allowing for the selective generation of wood-derived oxygen-containing compounds and olefinic polymer-derived aliphatic compounds in different temperature ranges. Therefore, this approach expands the versatility of catalytic process design and broadens the scope of the final products, enabling the use of different catalysts and conditions for wood and plastic pyrolysis 3437 .

“…Polycarbonate (PC) is currently the largest consumer of bisphenol A (BPA). Therefore, pyrolysis of PC waste has been widely studied 1 3 because it allows the recovery of oil and gas from polymeric waste 4 , 5 . This, by itself, represents a significant advantage to treating polymeric waste combined with other resins and organic additives, which cannot be treated by mechanical recycling and solvolysis 6 13 .…”
