Feeling Medusa: Tentacular Troubling of Academic Positionality, Recognition and Respectability

Abstract: This article explores a series of tentacular troublings inspired by Donna Haraway’s (2016) concept of String Figuring (SF). We consider these troublings as relational entanglements which produce perturbations of our gender, positioning, recognition, and respectability as feminist academics in Higher Education. We activate tentacular troublings as a refrain for contemplating differences/ings in our academic lives and as a critique of contemporary neo-liberal academia which ossifies, fixes, and freezes feminist … Show more

“…Still, I try to dedicate much of my workload mentoring students, often budgeting 75% of grant money toward student training, working with communities comprised of 2SLGBTQ+ and BIPOC youth, and taking part in EDIA 4 initiatives. My affective positionality is ever‐present and continuously in motion (Zarabadi et al., 2019), both as a way of being and becoming. Vulnerability, a key factor in doing this research, allows me to acknowledge that I am in a position of continuous learning, and consistent fact‐checking.…”

“…Research-creation practices “activate immanent co-creation of knowledge through art-based expression and experimentation” (Fairchild et al, 2022, p. 8). We devised events to enable intra-actions with the data so that we might erupt, explode, and become with and in-between one another including collaging (Cranham et al, 2022; Culshaw, 2019; Fairchild et al, 2022), painting with data (Balmer, 2021), string figuring (Fairchild et al, 2022; Haraway, 2016; Zarabadi et al, 2019), collaborative writing simultaneously (Cranham et al, in press), collective biography (Davies & Gannon, 2006), and video collaging (Hogarth et al, 2022). As data-method-praxis-play, our processual methodologies are experiments which take our post-qualitative inquiry into unfamiliar territory.…”

“…When exploring knotty articulations, Haraway (2016) calls us to disrupt habitual and unquestioned practices of knowing by engaging in a metaphorical game of cat's cradle (string figuring/ SF philosophy) to think with and alongside a variety of sociocultural relations and affects. Following other feminist scholars (Niccolini et al, 2018;Osgood, 2019;Osgood and Giugni, 2015;Osgood and Mohandas, 2020;Truman, 2018;Tsing, 2015;Zarabadi et al, 2019) who have used the same or a similar approach to explore the generative and agentic nature of everyday material-discursive happenings (such as tweeting), I pick up and pull at the threads of this tweet to participate more considerately and effusively in the phenomenon of neoliberalism as it relates to being a preschooler. Therefore, as Osgood (2019) starts with Lego to explore gendering in early childhood and Tsing (2015) starts with mushrooms to explore life in capitalist ruins, I start with the preschool-aged child as a fleshy being, knowing that gnarly fraying lies ahead.…”
