Feline cystadenomatosis affecting the ears and skin of 57 cats (2011–2019)

Abstract: Objectives This study aimed to understand epidemiological factors associated with feline cystadenomatosis, including signalment and papillomavirus PCR status. Cystadenomatosis is an uncommon condition primarily involving the ceruminous and apocrine skin and ear glands. Methods This was a retrospective case series. Clinical records from 2011 to 2019 from a tertiary referral hospital in Boston, MA, USA were screened for cases, and case data were re-evaluated and analyzed. “…Os cistos ceruminosos nos condutos auditivos de gatos originam-se nas glândulas ceruminosas e podem causar sintomas leves a graves de otite externa e média secundária, causados pelo efeito obstrutivo dos cistos, interferindo na autolimpeza normal (Loft et al, 2022). No presente caso relatado o paciente apresentava otite externa, com presença de sinais clínicos há cerca de 5 anos, sem melhora definitiva.…”

“…Feline cystadenomatosis is a benign, cutaneous condition involving the formation of multiple cysts originating from the secretory portion of modified apocrine sweat glands. This condition has been designated in the literature by many synonyms: cystomatosis; apocrine hidrocystomas/hidrocystomatosis; sebaceous, ceruminous, ceruminous gland or apocrine cysts; sweat gland cysts of the skin; apocrine cystadenoma; ceruminous adenoma; ceruminous cystadenoma/cystadenomatosis/cystomatosis; cystomatosis; epitrichial cystadenomas; melanotic ceruminous cysts; and ceruminous gland hyperplasia 1 . The term hidrocystoma/hidrocystomatosis is most commonly used in veterinary medicine in reference to modified apocrine cysts developing on the eyelids.…”

“…Over the years, the treatments of choice for apocrine cysts were considered surgical excision or observation without therapy (Scott et al., 2001 ). More recently other possible options were proposed such as chemical ablation with trichloroacetic acid, laser surgery, cauterisation and cryosurgery (Corriveau, 2012 ; Duclos, 2006 ; Loft et al., 2021 ; Yang et al., 2007 ). However, the continued formation of new lesions after removal is reported (Loft et al., 2021 ).…”

In our case, due to the generalised distribution of the lesions, the dog was only monitored over time and no treatment was undertaken.…”
