In this article we use a new and rich longitudinal data set, The Stockholm Birth Cohort Study, which allows us to follow a cohort of girls and boys until they reach 48 years of age. We study differences in the social background and adult living conditions among men and women with different experiences of involvement in crime. It is clear that the female cohort members who have been registered for crime have experienced more disadvantaged childhoods than the males registered for offending. The results also indicate that involvement in crime seems to cost more for females, in terms of social exclusion.

The linkages among several popular theories in the delinquency literature-social disorganization, strain, and social control theory-as well as their effects on delinquent behavior are investigated in this study. Social disorganization has been primarily studied with aggregate-level data in prior work, and we note certain theoretical and empirical issues associated with this approach. In this study of public high school students in Mississippi (n = 8,338), social disorganization is measured by observed indicators of juveniles' perceptions of neighborhood deterioration. Social strain is operationalized through perceptions of blocked opportunity, whereas social control is measured through the respondents' reported level of attachment, commitment, and involvement in school. Structural equation models with latent variables are estimated separately by race and residence in order to more fully compare the linkages among these

<p>El objetivo de este estudio es examinar cinco áreas del perfil de los estudiantes que se hallan en la etapa de transición entre el primer ciclo de educación secundaria y el segundo y su relación con el proceso de inclusión. Los datos fueron recolectados por medio de cinco cuestionarios psicométricos adaptados, reestructurados y validados para su uso en población estudiantil uruguaya. Se halló que 36 de las 46 variables investigadas generaron desigualdades de diferente magnitud. Esto señala la vulnerabilidad de las trayectorias estudiantiles a los factores contextuales así como las necesidades específicas de los procesos académicos. Los resultados del análisis correlacional y multivariante mostraron que las cinco áreas del desarrollo se interrelacionan y que las trayectorias más vulnerables se hallan asociadas a un conjunto de factores que denotan los contextos socioeconómicos de procedencia. Los componentes del desarrollo presentan diferentes grados de sensibilidad a los factores de riesgo, de lo que se extrae que mayor grado de sensibilidad exige coordinar intervenciones más complejas. La interrelación de las áreas es además susceptible a la acumulación progresiva de componentes positivos en situaciones favorables y negativos en situaciones desfavorables. Esto es particularmente visible en los procesos del rezago educativo y de las expectativas de estudios y plantea que detectar el momento en el que se inicia el fracaso escolar es clave para prevenir la deserción educativa.</p>
