Feminist activism 25 years after Beijing

Abstract: Young women have taken the lead in a new wave of feminist and democratic protests that have erupted across a wide range of countries, North and South. These movements raise a range of political and analytic questions: to what extent is it useful to identify the recent wave of activism in terms of a new generation of activists? How different is the 'new' Feminism to earlier forms, and what differences and continuities divide and unite the generations? These questions are explored through examining the character… Show more

“…People who come of age in times of social, economic, and/or political upheaval will be marked by those experiences. As such, political generations emerge through the shared experiences, ideologies and identities forged in a particular context (Cullen and Fischer 2014 ; Molyneux et al 2020 ). As Mannheim ( 1952 ) cautioned, not all young people are affected in the same way; for example, they might respond in more liberal or conservative directions, forming distinct “generational units” (304).…”

“…Latin American feminist activism illustrates what initially may seem to be a generational shift, part of what has been designated as a “fourth wave” of global feminist activity, with younger activists taking the lead in contemporary feminist and democratic protests in the North and South (Cochrane 2013 ; Chamberlain 2017 ; Molyneux et al 2020 ; Natalucci and Rey 2018 ; Ponce Lara 2020 ). But, as reflected in other regions and activisms, the NUM movement exhibits what might be more accurately described as a renewal: the rejuvenation of a movement that still includes earlier generations.…”
