Fermented Milk Containing Lactobacillus casei Strain Shirota Preserves the Diversity of the Gut Microbiota and Relieves Abdominal Dysfunction in Healthy Medical Students Exposed to Academic Stress

Abstract: Stress-induced abdominal dysfunction is an attractive target for probiotics. To investigate the effects of the probiotic Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota on abdominal dysfunction, a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted with healthy medical students undertaking an authorized nationwide examination for academic advancement. For 8 weeks, until the day before the examination, 23 and 24 subjects consumed an L. casei strain Shirota-fermented milk and a placebo milk daily, respectively. In addition … Show more

“…L actobacillus casei, one of the species of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), has been used for centuries as a health-promoting microbe in fermented food to decrease inflammation, regulate the intestinal microenvironment, and reduce stress-associated abdominal dysfunction in healthy subjects exposed to stressful situations (1)(2)(3). As a robust organism, L. casei can adapt to a wide range of harsh environments, e.g., it has a high tolerance to alcohol (4).…”

“…Stress also disrupts the gut microbiome in humans, although impact of ACE specifically is unknown (Kato-Kataoka et al, 2016; Knowles et al, 2008). In adults exposed to trauma, those who developed PTSD had lower total gut abundance of the phyla Actinobacteria , Lentisphaerae , and Verrucomicrobia , compared with those who did not develop PTSD (Hemmings et al, 2017).…”
