Ferrimagnetism of New Filled Skutterudite SmFe4As12Synthesized at High Pressure

Abstract: A new filled skutterudite SmFe 4 As 12 has been synthesized at high temperature and high pressure. The magnetic properties of this compound was studied in terms of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and specific heat measurments. SmFe 4 As 12 shows a magnetic transition at T A ¼ 39 K. Temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and field dependence of T A observed in the specific heat measurement suggest ferrimagnetic alignment of the magnetic moments of Fe 3d band and Sm… Show more

“…On the other hand, when Eu 2+ is replaced by other divalent Sr or Ba ions, no magnetic order is observed although ferromagnetic spin fluctuations were reported [13][14][15]. In the case of La for the replacement, an itinerant ferromagnetism associated with Fe 3d moments is observed below a Curie temperature of ∼ 5.2 K in LaFe 4 As 12 [16,17] . The difference of the magnetic ordering temperature for those compounds indicates the strong exchange coupling between Eu 4f electrons and itinerant Fe 3d electrons [11].…”

“…Indeed, it has been noted previously that the chemistry of f-elements with arsenic is quite diverse, , with several lanthanide-iron-arsenic ternaries examined during the search for new compounds with peculiar chemical and physical features. Surprisingly, only a handful of stoichiometries have been discovered so far: RFeAs (R = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd), RFe 2 As 2 (R = Eu), R 12 Fe 57.5 As 41 (R = La and Ce), RFe 4 As 12 (R = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb ), and R 6 Fe 13 As (R = Pr and Nd).…”
