Ferrocene Species Included within a Pyrogallol[4]arene Tube

Abstract: Tubes versus spheres: A new inclusion complex of alkylpyrogallol[4]arene and ferrocene is described. Unlike the previously reported dimer, the tubular motif shown is not stable in methanolic solution and dissociates into a dimer. Its formation is thus likely due to a high alkylpyrogallol[4]arene/ferrocene ratio coupled with shifting solvent conditions during evaporation.

“…The bowl‐shaped cavity of the RsC and PgC also works as perfect host for guest molecules of different shapes and functionalities . These structural features are useful not only in the construction of various supramolecular frameworks, such as hydrogen‐bonded dimers/hexamers and metal‐seamed dimers/hexamers, but also in the applications of RsC and PgC in the field of, for example, molecular recognition, host–guest complexes, gas sorption and separation …”

“…Pyrogallol [4]arenes (PgC x s), are the pyrogallol-based members of the family of macrocycles known as calixarenes, so named for their resemblance to a "calyx" or cup. The lower rim of the cup is typically hydrophobic in PgC x s, while the upper rim is hydrophilic due to the presence of twelve hydroxyl groups.…”

“…If the framework were spherical we would expect a more negative T int for PgC 1 Fe than for PgC 3 Ni because the distance between the metal centers should be similar for the two spheres but the magnetic moment per atom is higher for Fe than for Ni 4c. 5b, 7a,b, 15…”
