Ferrocene-Supported Compartmental Ligands for the Assembly of 3d/4f Complexes

Abstract: Site-specific coordination ligands, also known as compartmental ligands, have been used for the preparation of heterometallic complexes. These ligands, by virtue of possessing specific binding sites, can encapsulate different metal ions in their coordination pockets. Such compartmental ligands have been widely used for the preparation of heterometallic 3d/4f complexes which have applications in molecular magnetism. This Review summarizes our efforts in the use of ferrocene-based compartmental ligands for the p… Show more

“…Compartmental ligands play a major role in the synthesis of 3d-4f complexes. 57 In this regard, the ligand H 3 L was synthesized by adopting a previously published method. 31,32 In our previous work 32 involving this ligand, we assumed, based on the crystal structure of its heterometallic complexes, that the ligand had an open structure resulting from the combination of 2-aminobenzohydrazide with two equivalents of o-vanillin.…”

“…This was successfully employed producing a number of compounds with SMM properties. [131][132][133][134][135][136] The second approach uses a bifunctional ligand (see scheme 2 B) with well-separated pockets designed to appeal to 4 f ions involving oxygen donors as well as pockets suited for 3d ions. This approach was also shown to result in 3d-4f SMMs for example using the Hbpca = bis(2-pyridylcarbonyl)amine ligand.…”

“…Lanthanide coordination complexes act as promising candidates for molecular device design, thanks to their exceptional optical [43][44][45][46] and magnetic properties. 47,48 The presence of 4f electrons in lanthanide ions facilitates these complexes to show unique luminescence behavior. [43][44][45][46] Despite these features, achieving bright luminescence is hindered by the Laporte forbidden nature of f-f transitions in trivalent lanthanide ions, leading to weak emission upon direct excitation.…”
