Ferroelectric and Photostrictive Properties of Fine‐Grained PLZT Ceramics Derived from Mechanical Alloying

Abstract: Single-phase lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) solid solution powder was synthesized from the constituent oxides at ambient temperature through a mechanical alloying (MA) process and was then densified to fine-grained ceramics by sintering and hot-pressing. The anomalous photovoltaic effect (APV) and photoinduced strain of the resultant PLZT ceramics were investigated and analyzed in association with the influence of grain size. It was found that a photoinduced voltage up to 6000 V⅐cm ؊1 can be obtained… Show more

“…This value is reasonably high for the KNbO 3 and NaNbO 3 system without other special dopants. In fact, according to the relationship between d 33 and grain size for Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 -based ceramics [11], the d 33 value can be further raised by properly increasing the grain size.…”

“…According to Poosanaasa and Uchino [4], the properties of PLZT ceramics, including ferroelectric, piezoelectric and APV properties, have strong dependence upon the compositions of the solid solution system. On the other hand, the photo electromotive force (photo-EMF) in APV effect has an inverse proportional relationship with the mean grain size of the PLZT ceramics [5][6][7]. To investigate the intrinsic compositional effect upon the performance of PLZT, the influence of the grain size should be eliminated.…”

“…Then, the piezoelectric constant (d 33 ) and the electromechanical coupling factor (k p ) of the Ba-and Ti-doped ceramics were lower than those of non-doped Li 0.06 (Na 0.5 K 0.5 ) 0.94 NbO 3 ceramics, due to the decrease of grain size. In fact, according to the relationship between d 33 and the grain size of Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 -based ceramics, 15 the d 33 value decreases rapidly when the grain size is reduced. On the other hand, the mechanical quality factor (Q m ) of the sintered samples enhanced with increasing the Ba and Ti content.…”
