Ferromagnetic Nanoparticle–Assisted Polysulfide Trapping for Enhanced Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract: The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is a promising candidate for next-generation high-density energy storage devices because of its ultrahigh theoretical energy density and the natural abundance of sulfur. However, the practical performance of the sulfur cathode is plagued by fast capacity decay and poor cycle life, both of which can be attributed to the intrinsic dissolution/shuttling of lithium polysulfides. Here, a new built-in magnetic field-enhanced polysulfide trapping mechanism is discovered by introducin… Show more

“…Performance enhancement accompanied by electrochemical data indicating the improvement of the electrode kinetics was also achieved with further group 8-10 transition metals, such as the Pd 3 Co alloy (15 wt% nanoparticle additive), 360 iridium (10 wt% or 25 wt% nanoparticles on Ketjen black as a host or separator coating), 349 and iron (nanoparticles embedded in Ndoped CNFs mixed with graphene as a separator coating 387 and Fe/Fe 3 C nanoparticles with a graphene shell on a cotton textile as a host). 389 Zhang et al sputtered aluminum or titanium on the surfaces of sulfur/carbon electrodes to realize an improvement due to enhanced electrical conductivity, lled interspaces and related connement as well as improved electrode kinetics. 363 As seen in Table 6, aluminium provided for better results than titanium, which might also be related to the higher amount of deposited aluminium.…”

“…This shuttle effect could be mitigated by 1) trapping/confining the soluble LiPSs in the cathode by physical and chemical adsorption, [ 12–15 ] which prevents the transport of soluble LiPSs in the electrolyte, and 2) enhancing the kinetics of LiPS conversion reactions so that the soluble long‐chain LiPS could transform to insoluble short‐chain LiPS quickly, limiting the lifetime of soluble LiPS. [ 16,17 ] Therefore, a superior Li–S battery could be achieved by designing a cathode with high electrical conductivity (to facilitate electron transport), [ 18,19 ] a porous structure (to accommodate volume expansion), [ 9,20 ] strong polar affinity for LiPSs (to increase physiochemical adsorption), [ 18,21,22 ] and fast kinetics for LiPSs conversion (to accelerate the reaction kinetics). [ 23 ]…”

“…The contradictionb etween energy shortage and demand has promoted the transformation of advanced energy storaged evices and energyc onversion technologies. [1] Amongavariety of rechargeable batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries have attracted extensive attention in the past few years. [2] Comparedw ith the mosta dvanced commercial lithium ion batteries, lithiumsulfur batteries not only have higher theoretical specific capacity (1672 mAh g À1 )a nd energy density (2600 Wh kg À1 ), but also have the advantages of low cost and environmental friendliness.…”
