“…Feed pretreatment relies on the use of coagulants and adsorbents to promote the formation of cells and AOM aggregates that, in turn, are easily removed from the membrane surface and show better filterability properties upon attachment (Huang et al, 2019;Xing et al, 2019;Zhang Y. et al, 2020;Xu et al, 2021). Alternatively, oxidants are increasingly used in pretreatment to reduce and mineralize the concentration of the smaller organics fraction responsible for irreversible fouling (Liu et al, 2018;Lee et al, 2019Lee et al, , 2021Wan et al, 2019;Ren et al, 2020). Despite their positive impacts on the fouling mitigation, primary challenges arose from concerns related to the effect of the chemical agents on the algal biomass, their release into the environment, and the high energy and capital expenses demanded by these techniques (Discart et al, 2015;Alshahri et al, 2021b).…”

“…Ultrafiltration (UF)-based membrane separations have been broadly employed in advanced drinking water treatments. Nevertheless, the inevitable membrane fouling causes a decrease in the water permeance, reduces the membrane lifetime, and increases the operational cost, which limits the sustainable application of the UF membranes. To alleviate membrane fouling, various strategies have been proposed, including regulating the water quality of the feed with pretreatments (i.e., coagulation, adsorption, and oxidation), optimizing the operating conditions, and antifouling modifications . The pretreatment strategies can efficiently reduce membrane fouling, while the operational costs are also increased due to the additional processes.…”

“…In recent years, membrane technology has received more attention as a suitable alternative to conventional separation techniques for water/wastewater treatment applications. Among pressure-driven membrane separation processes, the ultrafiltration (UF) process with higher water flux and lower energy consumption and cost than reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) processes is a good candidate for water/wastewater treatment applications. …”
