Fetal Anatomy of the Human Carotid Sheath and Structures In and Around It

Abstract: The aim of this study was to find basic rules governing the morphological development of the typical neurovascular sheath. We carried out histological examination of 15 paraffin-embedded mid-term fetuses at 9-25 weeks of gestation (three fetuses each at 9, 12, 15, 20, and 25 weeks). As the result, the vagus nerve showed a high propensity to change its topographical relationship with the common carotid artery (CCA) during 9-20 weeks of gestation: that is, from a primitive ventral course to a final dorsal course… Show more

“…Even after the cervical sinus had been lost due to caudal growth of the hyoid arches and their fusion with the cardiac elevation 20) , the fifth pouch appeared to maintain its lumen immediately lateral to the arytenoid swelling. The present observations as well as our previous studies using mid-term fetuses [21][22][23][24] suggest that the cervical sinus is unlikely to provide a cyst-like remnant. Overall, we conclude that both the ultimobranchial body and the cervical sinus have been overemphasized as being central to the origins of adult pathologies.…”

“…These landmarks for identification had corresponded to the subjects (orbital muscle, pterygoid process) or key structures (lingual nerve, submandibular gland, superior cervical ganglion, digastric muscle) in our recent studies (Miyake et al, 2010;Katori et al, 2011a,b,c;Osanai et al, 2011).…”

“…Observations and photography were usually performed with a Nikon Eclipse 80, but photos at ultra-low magnification (less than x1 at the objective lens) were taken using a high grade flat scanner (Epson GTX970) with translucent illumination. Dako N1573 antibody for smooth muscle actin is useful for a marker of endothelial cells of arteries 10) . CD34 is the best vascular marker in fetuses 11) , but because of severe decalcification, the antibody was not available for present specimens.…”
