Nevertheless, several studies have reported that chronic maternal exposure to excessive iodine may cause fetal or neonatal hypothyroidism and goitre (Mehta et al 1983; Bartalena et al 2001; Serreaul et al 2004). “…The newborn had a goiter but normal thyroid function. In another article, Serreau et al [23] reported a fetal goiter due to excess iodine diagnosed at 22 weeks’ gestation. Even though maternal serum and urine analysis did not demonstrate excess iodine, fetal plasma, after delivery at 39 weeks of gestation, still had an elevated concentration of iodine demonstrating the persistence of iodine in the fetus even after the mother had not taken potassium iodine after the 21st week of gestation.…”
