Fetal urine production and accuracy when estimating fetal urinary bladder volume

Abstract: The urine production rate presented here is in parity with recent previous reports. We distinguish between different kinds of measurement error. The variability was mostly related to the selection of appropriate bladder image, whereas measurement of the selected bladder image accounted for only a minor part of the resulting variability.

“…For instance, the prolate ellipsoid or trapezoid formula is used for measuring ovarian volumes 1 and the ellipsoid formula for fetal bladder volume calculations. 2 In such volume calculations, a certain regularity of shape of the structure is assumed and correction for surface irregularities is not possible.…”

“…Standard deviation (SD) was used because the variation was normally distributed. Furthermore, there was a linear relationship between bladder volume and the measurement error, which has been thoroughly documented in three previous studies (Fagerquist et al, 2001;Fagerquist et al, 2003;Fagerquist et al, 2002). This is a prerequisite for using a linear regression function (Skrepnek, 2005).…”

“…In the first paper, the volume measurement errors (SD) when using the conventional method and the ellipsoid formula were analysed (Fagerquist et al, 2001). The SD for the measurement error was 17.3-10.9% for bladder volumes of 5-40 mL.…”
