Fetoplacental transmission and placental response to SARS-CoV-2: Evidence from the literature

Abstract: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a dreadful novel coronavirus with global health concerns among pregnant women. To date, the vertical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy remains controversial. We briefly report recent findings of placental response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and updates on vertical transmission. We systematically searched PubMed and Google Scholar databases according to PRISMA guidelines for studies reporting the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the placen… Show more

“…Due to the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection, many efforts have also been dedicated to the investigation of maternal, fetal/placental and neonatal immunity, even following vaccination [ 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Comparative studies have highlighted alterations in the activation of systemic cytokines and peripheral leukocytes between pregnant and non-pregnant COVID-19 patients [ 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Many authors are investigating ACE2 and its impact on COVID 19 transmission, particularly on SARS-CoV-2 process-related genes. This will provide enormous ideas about virus transmission and reproduction Ezechukwu et al 2022). The singlecell RNA sequencing method helps the researchers to tabulate all the data required.…”

“…On the other hand, the receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), used by SARS-CoV-2 for infecting pulmonary cells, was also found in placental tissue [ 22 , 23 , 24 ], supporting the idea of vertical transmission for this type of infection [ 25 , 26 ]. Recent investigations of placental pathologies indicated the presence of feto-maternal vascular malperfusion and placental inflammation with excessive infiltration of CD3+ CD8+ lymphocytes, CD68+ macrophages, and CD20+ lymphocytes [ 27 , 28 , 29 ].…”
