Fiber Bragg grating sequential UV-writing method with real-time interferometric side-diffraction position monitoring

Abstract: This work presents a new sequential UV-writing procedure for fabricating long fiber Bragg grating (FBG) devices. To real-time accurately align the position of every exposed FBG section prior to UV exposure, a single-period reference fiber grating with strong refractive index modulation is probed by applying an interferometric side-diffraction method to measure the grating phase as the position reference. In this way the overlapped FBG sections can be connected section-by-section without obvious phase errors, e… Show more

“…The parameters used to design the ACFBG used as the first technique for dispersion compensation as described in Section 2 are tabulated in Table 2 [30,33,39]. The grating length is selected from the mentioned range to provide optimum dispersion compensation performance according to the technique used, as will be shown later.…”

“…The use of narrowband FBGs for add/drop multiplexers can also help extracting a single wavelength from the fiber without disturbing other wavelengths thus can achieve high optical data rates. A demultiplexer can be achieved by cascading multiple drop sections of the OADM, where each drop element uses a FBG set to the wavelength to be (Hsu et al, 2005) demultiplexed. Conversely, a multiplexer can be achieved by cascading multiple add sections of the OADM.…”

“…Figure 3(c) shows the typically resulted periodic pattern along the x-axis captured by the CCD camera (grey solid line), the pattern after the filtering+taking-real-part procedure (grey dotted line) and the obtained phase distribution by taking the arg of the filtered data (bold solid line). [9] To test the nanometric-scale movement detection algorithm, the system is implemented with the LabVIEW software for automatically controlling the whole position monitoring process. The one dimensional position reading is executed firstly.…”
