Currently, the use of composite materials in the construction areas has had a great impact on the society; mainly, those related with sustainability and environment aspects. Daily proposals aimed at overcoming the properties of traditional materials that arise, which include emergent materials either from waste or recycled products. One of them is related to the textile materials, which include fibers such as wool, hemp, linen, and cotton. In the past decade, special attention has been focused on the used clothes, which represent a source of raw materials environmentally responsible and economically profitable. Textile materials are discarded daily around the world, representing approximately 1.5% of the generated waste. Blue jeans are the most used clothing in the world, and they are elaborated by one of the most commonly used natural textile fiberscotton. Textile materials have been reused in different applications, for example, in the production of poor-quality wires, crushed to manufacture noise and temperature insulation materials, and as fillers or reinforcements of concrete. In this chapter, different topics are described that include: (a) environmental impact of textile waste-a result of massive consumption of clothing, (b) recycling and reuse of textile waste, and (c) waste and recycled textile materials used as building materials.

Thus, the individual and combined effects of a moist ambiance and fluctuating temperature are numerous that cause hindrances in the trouble free functioning of one of the most viable materials of construction, the GFRP composite.…”

A composite material scores over its metallic counter parts in many aspects and can be tailor-made to suit the specific purpose for which it is conceived. However, during functioning the composite is exposed to the severities of the surrounding ambiance and is damaged and degraded by the atmospheric deterrent-reagents like moisture and heat fluctuations. In order to ensure a safe, extended service life-span of the composite material, it is, therefore, pertinent that the behaviour of the material related to its physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics must be analysed and established under different fluctuating ambient conditions. The present report aims at analysing and presenting the degradation/damages caused to the glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) composites under different ambient conditions and the role played by some inherent factors like the constituent components of the GFRP composites, its pre-existing flaws created during manufacturing/service-life, volume fraction fibres, length and distribution of the fibres in the matrix phase and the curing processes adopted for strengthening and stabilising the matrix structure.

Abstract. The purpose of this article is to show the modern engineering, in which sustainability and taking care of ecology play a significant role. The authors are focused on FRP composite materials and their applications in civil engineering. Case studies showing renovation and design of new bridges with the use of FRP are presented and discussed to clarify benefits, which this solution provides. Main advantages of FRP materials in comparison with traditional ones, like concrete or steel are showed. The environmental impact of composites is described with respect to all life cycle of a product. Furthermore, some forms of waste management are covered. Last part of the paper refers to scientific description of the pedestrian bridge made of FRP, which was realized under the Fobridge research grant. The group of researchers headed by professor Chróścielewski from Gdansk University of Technology has developed a design solution of the pedestrian bridge manufactured in one production cycle. Moreover, the footbridge construction contains a significant share of a recyclable material commonly called PET. The article contains main characteristics of the structure and production process based on the resin infusion.
