Fibonacci Backoff Algorithm for IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee

Abstract: The IEEE 802.15.4 is a standard for Wireless Personal Area Network (PAN) that supports low data rate, low cost, low complexity and low power consumption applications. The CSMA/CA algorithm of the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer employs the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) function to compute the backoff delay for each node. Using BEB function, it is possible that two or more nodes may collide if they choose the same backoff exponent value. Consequently this will increase collision and network contention level which wi… Show more

“…This technology is focused to create low-rate personal area networks (LR-WPAN). Its low power consumption feature make this protocol ideal for high that require secure communications, but with low data rates at short distances that maximizes the network lifetime [22]. This technology is suitable for low cost communications between nearby nodes without or with very little infrastructure.…”

“…MAC and application layer parameters) on the performance gain of the WSNs [17]. Secondly, we investigate a number of approaches that are proposed to improve the functionality of the MAC layer in IEEE 802.15.4-based WSNs [18,19] in presence of internal interference. Thirdly, we have conducted a preliminary simulation experiment to show the influence of a set of MAC parameters on the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC functionality in the presence of intensifying internal interference. In this survey, we are interested in WBSNs that are used in medical applications.…”

“…The last paper named "Fibonacci Backoff Algorithm for IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee" by the authors Muneer Bani Yassien, Marwa Salayma, Wail Mardini, and Yaser Khamayseh presented a simulation study for the applicability of the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) function to compute the backoff delay for each node in IEEE 802.15.4 system [5]. Using BEB function, it is possible that two or more nodes may collide if they choose the same backoff exponent value.…”
