Fibrinolysis in Venous Thromboembolism

Abstract: Fibrinolysis is of paramount importance in maintaining or regaining the patency of veins and pulmonary arteries obstructed by thrombi. Growing experimental and clinical evidence indicates that impaired fibrinolysis mediated by multiple complex mechanisms is involved in venous thromboembolism (VTE). Global plasma fibrin clot lysis markers, especially clot lysis time, have been reported to predict recurrent deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. The current overview summarizes available data linking fibrin… Show more

“…In recent years, CLT has been widely used as a tool to demonstrate the association of plasma fibrinolytic capacity with clinical outcomes in arterial and venous thrombosis. [8][9][10] The studies has been shown more robust results for cardiovascular diseases and stroke, whereas for venous thrombosis the results are still controversial. Recently, a study of 786 patients showed that area under the curve (AUC parameter) assessment was able to predict cardiovascular events in patients with stable coronary artery disease on aspirin monotherapy.…”

“…9 In the field of thrombosis, many studies with a considerable number of patients have shown that prolongation of CLT was associated with the risk of having the first thrombotic event and recurrence. 10 These results although interesting, need to be evaluated with caution, the technical variability of this test is an important factor and can affect the final interpretation of the data. Besides that, it is important to point out that historically this test could not be incorporated in the profile of routine assays and physicians do not use it in the clinical practice.…”
