Fibrosis as an Indication of Time in Infiltrating Breast Cancer and its Importance in Prognosis

Abstract: The histological grading of tumours according to their intrinsic malignancy is very important in the prognosis of breast cancer but within each grade the ultimate prognosis depends mainly on the age of the tumours. We have shown that tumour fibrosis is an indication of this time factor, increasing with the age of the tumour. Within each grade the metastatic ratio is higher and the 5 year and 10 year survival less with the scirrhous than with the non-scirrhous tumours. The establishment of axillary metastases i… Show more

“…In addition, via their interactions with cell-surface receptors, or with growth factors, ECM proteins provide biochemical signals that control various cellular processes such as proliferation, survival, and differentiation of both normal and tumor cells456. ECM deposition is a hallmark of cancers and has been used by pathologists as a poor-prognosis factor, long before the complexity of the ECM was even appreciated7.…”

“…Desmoplasia is significantly associated with invasive breast cancer and decreased relapse-free and overall survival. [13][14][15] Although uniform in their spindle-shaped appearance, fibroblasts may be identified by the expression of several different mesenchymal markers, including distinct non-overlapping markers such as α-smooth muscle actin and fibroblast-specific protein 1 (Fsp1). [16][17][18] As a key cellular component of the microenvironment, fibroblasts influence the growth and progression of breast cancers directly and indirectly, through secretion of growth factors, matrix proteins and angiogenic factors, as demonstrated through animal studies.…”
