As children’s worldview is shaped through books, the ideologies embedded in readings influence young readers’ values and beliefs. There are very limited representations of Taiwanese protagonists and their culture in the mainstream book market of the United States. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to examine the portrayal of Taiwanese children and culture in five picture books published in the US: Livia Blackburne’s I Dream of Popo (2021), Alan Woo’s Maggie’s Chopsticks (2015), Belle Yang’s Hannah is My Name (2008), Grace Lin’s The Ugly Vegetables (1999), and Yi Ling Hsu’s Typhoon Holidays (2015). To deeply analyse the textual and non-textual content of these picture books, the paper employs the theoretical framework of ideology and Orientalism, which is detailed in such patterns as characters, relationships, interactions, conflicts, and problem solutions in the stories. The authors of the study argue that the interwoven ideologies of gender roles, capitalism, and patriarchy implicitly exercise power over the young protagonists of the works examined. Moreover, the child characters are treated as ‘obedient others’ by the adults and dominant Western culture.

Providing spaces for adolescents to make sense of the world around them is often the work of educators, specifically those in Language Arts classrooms. In the current historical moment, adolescents often must make sense of the ways socio-political conflict impacts their world. Displacement, often an effect of socio-political conflict, is increasingly a theme in adolescents’ lives, and therefore a prevalent theme in the ways they see the world. Providing spaces for adolescents to discuss their relationships to displacement through Young Adult (YA) texts can provide educators a possible way to support to adolescents at this critical time in their lives. Using affect theory to analyze the ways emotion moves through YA texts and reading bodies, this article examines four YA texts: When Stars Are Scattered (Jamieson et al., 2020), Between Shades of Gray (Sepetys, 2011), Kira Kira (Kadohata, 2006), and They Called Us Enemy (Takei et al., 2019). In examining these YA texts, this article seeks to understand how displacement moves through each text and impacts adolescent characters.

This study analyses variation and change in Uruguayan Spanish address between formal (usted) and informal variants (tú, vos). It focusses on address representations in children’s literature written between 1918 and 1973 – foundational texts that helped consolidate national identity. Our study answers the following questions: (a) What were the most frequent pronominal and verbal address forms employed in early Uruguayan children’s literature? (b) What were their pragmatic and stylistic contexts of use? And (c) To what extent did those forms and uses differ from their contemporary counterparts? The second-person pronouns and verbs from eleven children’s books were analysed quantitatively to establish frequencies. We found that early children’s literature presented usted and tú as the urban norm. Vernacular vos was practically absent until the 1940s, and afterwards it was found only in specific constrained contexts. This differs markedly from contemporary literature for children, which favours voseo and reflects orality quite accurately.
