Fictive motion in the context of mountaineering

Abstract: Fictive motion in language (as in "the ridge went north") is claimed to reflect the attention focus of the observer on the extension and spatial layout of an entity. This paper investigates fictive motion in alpine narratives, which describe the experience of moving in a very specifically structured space. We examine space properties that are highlighted through fictive motion in this specific context and describe how they go beyond spatial extension. We further report the communicative motivation behind the u… Show more

“…Only the second clause (describing the observer lowering herself to the ledge) indicates that the motion is hypothetical. Nonetheless, the reliability measure Krippendorff's alpha was found to be 0.802, which represents substantial agreement (Egorova et al 2018).…”

“…According to Egorova et al (2018), the three major types of spatial descriptions encoded by FM differ in the spatial language used and in most cases can be distinguished based on the markers. However, in the absence of clear markers, only a broader context can disambiguate if the actual motion is present.…”

“…O movimento no espaço físico é um dos domínios experienciais mais básicos em nossa vida cotidiana, o que, para muitos pesquisadores, explica uma tendência cognitiva ao dinamismo na linguagem (Talmy 2000a, Egorova et al 2018.…”
