Field-aligned mesh joinery

Abstract: Mesh joinery is an innovative method to produce illustrative shape approximations suitable for fabrication. Mesh joinery is capable of producing complex fabricable structures in an efficient and visually pleasing manner. We represent an input geometry as a set of planar pieces arranged to compose a rigid structure, by exploiting an efficient slit mechanism. Since slices are planar, to fabricate them a standard 2D cutting system is enough. We automatically arrange slices according to a smooth cross field define… Show more

“…Generating such scaffolds for highly non-convex shapes, such as the bunny or armadillo, is more difficult. While 123D Make generates two families of planar contours orthogonal to each other, the works of Cignoni et al [2014] and construct scaffolds from planar pieces cut at arbitrary angles to one another; these works can hopefully be extended to provide sufficiently strong scaffolds for our fabrication process.…”

“…Several techniques have been proposed to design paper craft objects [Mitani and Suzuki 2004], plush objects [Mori and Igarashi 2007], and objects made of interlocking planar slices [Cignoni et al 2014;Schwartzburg and Pauly 2013;Hildebrand et al 2012]. Other techniques use geometric techniques to change surface appearance by synthesizing surface microgeometry [Weyrich et al 2009] or changing the shape to generate custom target caustics [Schwartzburg et al 2014].…”

“…Often, these abstractions are motivated by fabrication constraints of the underlying fabrication method, such as the milling of height fields [Weyrich et al 2007], the laser cutting of planar elements [Hildebrand et al 2012;Cignoni et al 2014], or the use of a specific material or primitives, such as plastic pipes [Sageman-Furnas et al 2015], in the process.…”

“…For many of these structures, finding valid assembly sequences is a non-trivial problem, and has been investigated in the context of 3D puzzles [Song et al 2012], jigsaw puzzles [Lau et al 2014], interlocking figures consisting of planar elements [Hildebrand et al 2012;Cignoni et al 2014], and furniture assembly [Fu et al 2015]. Deuss et al [2014] computed a work-minimizing assembly sequence for self-supporting structures that are composed of bricks or stone blocks without any mortar.…”
