Field biology of the cassava mealybug, Phenacoccus manihoti, and Its natural enemies in Zaire

Abstract: Three severe outbreaks of cassava mealybug (CM), Phenacoccus manihoti, have occurred in Zaire. Two were associated with droughts. The third occurred in the driest part of the country and ended only when nearly all cassava plants had been killed. Native coccinellid predators sometimes greatly reduced CM populations, but only after the cassava crop had been heavily damaged. The exotic coccinellid Diomus sp. may be an effective biological control agent in Kinshasa, where CM on a hybrid form of cassava remained co… Show more

“…However, the only predator established so far in Africa is Diomus sp. (Hennessy & Muaka, 1987). Efforts should be made to overcome the problems of establishing H. notata as this species was found more frequently in South America and seems to have a higher predation potential than Diomus sp.…”

“…Epidinocarsis lopezi was first released in Zaire in 1982, when CM populations in Bas-Zaire had already declined from the previous outbreak levels ( Lema and Herren, 1983). After a long establishment phase it spread rapidly, and now covers a large part of the area where the CM occurs Hennessey and Muaka, 1987). No CM outbreaks have been observed in western Zaire in the 1980s.…”

“…Other parasitoids, hyperparasitoids, and predators were also collected and their species com- position was reported . Some quantitative data concerning population dynamics in Bas-Zaire have been presented previously (Hennessey and Muaka, 1987); the present data concerning the whole country must, however, be considered qualitative in nature.…”

“…Diomus sp. was established only in the area of Kinshasa, Zaire (Hennessey & Muaka, 1987) and Malawi (Neuenschwander & Zweigert, 1994). In the present study, the difference in concentration on infested tips as compared to A. troberti was significant.…”
