Field Development Planning and Floating Platform Concept Selection for Global Deepwater Developments

Abstract: Successful deepwater field development planning requires close collaboration between the subsurface, drilling and completions, surface facility, operation and business teams that jointly constitute the development planning team. The reservoir is the main driver of the development plan. Despite significant technological advances in reservoir characterization, there remains a high degree of uncertainty in predicting well performance and recovery. This is attributable largely to the very high cost of deepwater dr… Show more

“…Specialized literature exists on the criteria and key decision factors to be considered during the identification of the best host for a given offshore field development, see for example (Reid, 2013), (Dekker, 2014), or (D'Souza, 2011: this crucial decision is typically made during the Concept Selection stage of a project and is then confirmed through Pre-front end engineering design (Pre-FEED) and FEED work.…”

“…Oil and gas exploration and exploitation require a large amount of economical resources mainly in offshore environments thus, field development planning has the main objective of maximizing the revenue for a given investment, this is maximizing the utility index (UI) defined as UI = NPV/NPI, where NPV is the net present value and NPI is the net present investment value. Scenarios with the greatest median (P 50 ) NPV and lowest spread between P 10 and P 90 NPV will be selected [1]. Economical evaluation becomes complicated since for example date of initial production and price of hydrocarbons vary randomly.…”
