Field efficacy of novaluron for control of Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on potato

Abstract: Field trials were conducted in 2003 and 2004 to assess the effectiveness of novaluron (Rimon 10EC), a benzoylphenyl urea chitin synthesis inhibitor, for Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), management on potato. Foliar applications of novaluron did not significantly reduce numbers of L. decemlineata adults, egg masses, or first instar larvae, but second-fourth instars were greatly suppressed. Although an application rate of 12.5 g AI ha À1 provided unsatisfactory protection, rates of 25 an… Show more

“…They might also find refuge on parts of the canopy that grew after the application. Indeed, Cutler et al (2007) did not see any immediate reductions in first instar larvae densities following novaluron treatments under different timing/rate regimes. That confirms our conclusion that novaluron effects on egg viability are insufficient to recommend its use as an ovicide.…”

“…The amount of saved tuber yield on the plants protected with Neem extract, B. bassiana and I. fumosorosea biopreparations was on average 5.2 t ha −1 compared with 7.2 t ha −1 for the plants protected with chemical insecticides. Also, Cutler et al (2007) found a significant increase in tuber yield on the plants protected chemically in comparison with the unprotected ones. The authors' own studies did not reveal any marked differences either in potato tuber yield between the plants protected by chemical insecticides: lambda-cyhalothrin, imidacloprid and thiamethoxam.…”

“…No effect of the protection against potato beetle was observed for the number of tubers set by the potato plants. Different results were obtained by Cutler et al (2007), who demonstrated a significant effect of potato protection against CPB on the number of set tubers. The application of insecticides did not affect the raw potato tuber tendency for darkening.…”

“…The effects of chitin synthesis inhibitors (CSIs) on L. decemlineata have been studied by several researchers (Sirota and Grafius 1994;Furlong and Groden 2001;Cutler et al 2005a). Cutler et al (2007) reported that novaluron at 50 g air/ha provided excellent and prolonged effect against L. decemlineata and could be a valuable tool in future L. decemlineata management programs. These insecticides with specific mode of action are relatively new to Iran.…”
