Field Enhanced Dielectronic Recombination ofSi11+Ions

Abstract: The enhancement of dielectronic recombination by applied electric fields has been observed and measured for the first time in a wide range of controlled and measurable fields using multiply charged ions. The heavy ion storage ring CRYRING at Stockholm University was used to store a beam of Si 111 and collide it with a cold electron target. Rydberg resonances up to n 25 are resolved for both the 2p 3͞2 and 2p 1͞2 series. The observation of a substantial monotonic increase of the rate coefficient for the group o… Show more

“…These high resolution experiments revealed discrepancies with earlier calculations for Si 11+ (Bartsch et al 1997). This was partly due to the increased precision of the experiments which now allowed resolution of individual nl states within each n-manifold.…”

“…We then describe the experimental measurements of the electric-field dependence of autoionization yields of the Ba 6p 1/2 nk and 6p 3/2 nk states. As we show, the autoionization yield is complementary to DR. A novel feature of the measurements is the use of a low-field form of Stark switching [2,[8][9][10][11]. Finally, we show that the observed autoionization yields match those calculated from the extrapolated autoionization rates of the Ba 6p j n states, which demonstrates that the proposed method for determining which states contribute to DR is sound.…”
