Field Installation Tests of Monopod Suction Pile and Tripod Suction Buckets

Abstract: Small-scale field tests on a monopod suction pile with and without the detachable penetration apparatus (DPA) and tripod suction buckets have been performed. One of the objectives of the field tests was to identify the capability of the DPA at small-scale and to obtain useful information for planned future full-scale field tests. The DPA which has been developed to control and increase the accuracy of the verticality of monopod suction piles during installation. In addition, it can also contribute to increase … Show more

“…However, it has been increasingly used in offshore construction owing to its various advantages that include applicability to most soils, except for extremely hard and soft ground; less noise than other construction methods, such as pile driving and concrete placement; less construction time; and ease of use in deep water. Recently, many studies have been conducted on enhancing foundations for offshore structures, such as offshore wind turbines [6,7], temporary structures for the construction of offshore bridges, and substructures of meteorological towers [8][9][10].…”

“…반면, 서남해안 해저지반의 많은 지역이 상당 히 두꺼운 연약한 퇴적층으로 조성되어 있어, 이들 형식을 그 대로 적용하기는 한계를 가진다. 이에 대한 대안으로 다양한 신형식 지지구조물형식이 연구되고 제시되어 왔다 (Houlsby and Byrne, 2000;Byrne and Houslby, 2003;Houlsby et al, 2005;Zhu et al, 2011;Choo et al, 2012;Kwag et al, 2013;Kim et al, 2014a;Shin et al, 2014). 이중에서 석션기 초는 안정성과 효율성을 가진 경제적인 지지구조물로 주목받 아왔다 (Houlsby et al, 2005;LeBlanc et al, 2010;Zhu et al, 2011;Hung and Kim, 2014;Kim et al, 2014a (Tjelta, 2001;Sparrevik, 2002;Anderson et al, 2005;Randolph and House, 2002 (Wang, et al, 2006;Zhang et al, 2011).…”

“…Suction caisson, also known as "suction bucket", is a highly competitive alternative for offshore wind foundation due to many advantages compared to the conventional offshore foundations: quick installation, no heavy driving equipment for penetration and no hammering noise (Byrne and Houlsby, 2003;Zhu et al, 2011;Choo et al, 2012;Kwag et al, 2013;Kim et al, 2014a). When the suction caisson foundation is used as a fixed structure installed on the coast, its seismic response should be taken into account as a part of the design procedure.…”
