Field measurement of specific growth rate, biomass, and primary production of benthic diatoms of Savin Hill Cove, Boston

Abstract: Abstract14C-labeling of chlorophyll a and subsequent extraction by high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) was adapted for field measurement of both specific growth rate and biomass of diatom films found on muddy intertidal sediments of Savin Hill Cove, a small embayment of northwest Dorchester Bay, Boston Harbor.

Thus, wind-induced waves are the main cause of resuspension, whereas light conditions [related to station elevation (Admiraal & Peletier 1980), solar radiation and water turbidity (Colijn 1983, p. 104)] are responsible for rnicrophytobenthos growth, as reported by Colijn & d e Jonge (1984).…”

“…The method developed by Banse (1977) cannot be applied to sediment-inhabiting algae in the Ems estuary because the living algae represent only a very small fraction of the total organic carbon (de Jonge 1979). Until very recently (Gould & Gallagher 1990) labelhng of chl a with I4C to determine microphytobenthos biomass was little used. For calculation of assimilation numbers (PB,,,,,) and for comparisons between areas, a biomass parameter, chl a, is often used.…”

“…Although grazing by benthic macrofauna is well known (Andersen & Kristensen 1988, Gould & Gallagher 1990, little is known about the rate of grazing. In 1974 and 1975 the m.acrofauna in th.e area near the mouth of the river LiWA was nearly absent; only low numbers of the ragworm Nereis diversicolor, the tellinid, bivalve Macoma baltica and the amphipod Corophium volutator were present (Van Es et al 1980).…”
