“…The five studies from the USA deal with the nature of social welfare curricula on the graduate and undergraduate levels (Seipel, ), the place of macropractice in the graduate level curricula (McNutt, ) and the extent and nature of political practice or PP opportunities in fieldwork (Dickinson, ; Pritzker & Lane, ; Wolk, Pray, Weismuller, & Dempsey, ). The studies found that although opportunities for PP learning do exist, particularly in macro concentrations, they are limited in both course work and fieldwork in BSW and MSW programmes.…”

“…The studies found that although opportunities for PP learning do exist, particularly in macro concentrations, they are limited in both course work and fieldwork in BSW and MSW programmes. In the most recent of these studies, Pritzker and Lane () found that, while only a minority of the study's students were enrolled in macro‐oriented placements, more than 50 per cent of field directors in BSW and MSW programmes reported that one or more of their students interacted with professional policy advocates or participated in policy advocacy or lobbying. Much rarer were placements that enabled students to work with elected officials or be exposed to electoral politics.…”

“…Social workers bring to these positions a combination of technical expertise and an understanding of the importance of contexts and relationships in guiding agency and governmental policy. Social workers in these positions also help to create a pipeline for future social work students and professionals to accrue to these positions ( Pritzker & Lane, 2014). However, fewer social workers are holding the influential managerial and policy positions that once were regularly held by MSWs (see, for example, Rosenberg, 2012).…”

“…Based on our research, the Rothman Report, and other related research, we also recommend an increase in policy-related field placements. The research in this area suggests that policy and politically-related field placements are rare, particularly for generalist and micro students (Hill et al, 2017;Pritzker & Lane, 2014). The work of the social work programs who have received grants from the CSWE Policy Practice in Field Education Initiative highlight the opportunities for this work to occur with micro, macro, and generalist students, in a variety of programs and settings (CSWE, n.d.).…”
