Field Quality Measurements of a 2-Tesla Transmission Line Magnet

Abstract: Abstract-A prototype 2-Tesla superconducting transmission line magnet for future hadron colliders was designed, built and tested at Fermilab. The 1.5 m long, combined-function gradientdipole magnet has a vertical pole aperture of 20 mm. To measure the magnetic field quality in such a small magnet aperture, a specialized rotating coil of 15.2 mm diameter, 0.69 m long was fabricated. Using this probe, a program of magnetic field quality measurements was successfully performed. Results of the measurements are pre… Show more

“…All quenches at this current range were occurring consistently at the magnet return conductor line where the liquid helium cooling was least effective. As shown in [3] and [6], the measured magnetic field properties that extend up to 10 th order of harmonic multipoles are within the range expected for the VLHC Stage 1 accelerator magnet, both at the full field of 2 Tesla, and at the beam injection field of 0.1 Tesla.…”

“…The power supply, the current leads and their operation are presented in [4][5], while the instrumentation and magnetic field measurement results and analysis are presented in [3] and [6]. A simplified schematic of the current flow to energize the magnet is shown in Fig.…”

“…With the AISI 1008, 1mm thick laminated steel for the VLHC Stage 1 magnet, the deviation at 90 kA current (also 2 T field) was about 40%. With the help of correction holes in the magnet poles, however, a very highquality magnetic field was achieved [6]. Based on this experience we expect that with some effort an even higher accelerator quality B-field can be achieved with the proposed window frame magnetic design for the fast cycling magnet.…”

“…The concept of transmission line superconducting accelerator magnets was first developed for the VLHC Stage 1 accelerator [13], and a short prototype of the VLHC-LF magnet was successfully built and tested [14,15]. This magnet has been also proposed recently for the Low Energy Ring [16] at the LHC.…”
