Field-Scale Evaluation of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate, Urea, and Urea Treated with N-(N-Butyl) Thiophosphoric Triamide Applied to Grassland in Ireland

Abstract: This study investigated the effects of nitrogen (N) source, rate, and timing of application on dry-matter yield (DMY), N responses, N uptake and N-use efficiency (NUE) in a grass crop. The experiment used three fertilizer treatments: calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN), urea, and urea treated with N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide (NBTPT), applied at 0 (control), 25, 50, and 75 kg ha −1 of N over eighteen application timings. “…Dry matter yield (DMY) was determined by hand-cutting the grass to a height of 40 mm, at regular intervals of 25 days after emergence, which was recorded at day 8 after seeding. The time interval for cutting of the grass was consistent with recommendations reported in earlier studies for maximum yield (e.g., Fulkerson et al, 1993;Antille et al, 2015b). At the time this report was produced, a total of four cuts were completed, however the experiment will continue to include a total of six cuts.…”
