Field trial of the efficacy of a combination of ivermectin and praziquantel in horses infected with roundworms and tapeworms

Abstract: Two hundred and thirty-three horses were screened for the presence of roundworms by faecal egg counts (FECs) and for tapeworms by an ELISA specific for antibodies to the immunodominant 12 kDa and 13 kDa tapeworms antigen. The 62 horses were found to be infected with both parasites were treated with a combination of 0.2 mg/kg ivermectin and 1.5 mg/kg praziquantel. The treatment suppressed the median FEC of the horses to zero for 10 weeks and significantly reduced their anti-12/13 kDa antibody levels. The estima… Show more

“…In Brazil, horses are being used for restoration of public order, military ceremonials, and equestrian sports, such as jumping competitions and riding competitions (Campos, 2017). In equine breeding, parasitic infections represent significant economic losses that affect animal health by causing diseases such as diarrhea and colic and also lead to weak physical conditions and performance (Barrett et al, 2004). The breeding systems of these animals are intensive, extensive, or semi-intensive, and can cause parasitic infections, especially in the first few weeks of life (Molento, 2005).…”

“…Ivermectin given to horses orally, as a paste or liquid at 0.2 mg/kg bwt, is highly effective (95-100%) against adult and most fourth-stage larvae of cyathostomes, large strongyles, ascarids, pinworms, stomach worms, threadworms and lungworm (Barrett et al 2004). Although an i.m.…”

“…This is longer than suggested by previous uncontrolled studies (Proudman and Trees 1996, Proudman and Holdstock 2000, Barrett and others 2004) and may be due to differences in the reinfection pressure after their treatment; all the horses in this study shared their original grazing.…”
