Field Trial Results of a Drilling Advisory System

Abstract: Field tests of a real-time Drilling Advisory System (DAS) have demonstrated value in several drill well surveillance applications. This system receives drilling data and transmits recommended operating parameters to the driller using existing rig systems and Wellsite Information Transfer Specification (WITS) data records. Using this industry standard, DAS can be deployed to any suitable data acquisition system on the diverse rig equipment available in the industry. The DAS computer may also be connected to a c… Show more

“…If the torque limit has not been violated, λ will be equal to zero and the constrained WOB0 value will be equal to the WOB0 found by the optimizer. If the torque limit is exceeded, the WOB demanded by the ES algorithm will be reduced until the torque is again below its limiting value, at which point λ will retain a value determined by the summation term in equation (13). How fast the reduction in WOB takes place once the constraint is violated is controlled by the gain parameters KP and KI in equation (13).…”

How fast the reduction in WOB takes place once the constraint is violated is controlled by the gain parameters KP and KI in equation (13). They should be large enough to ensure that the penalty variable, λ, reduces the requested WOB faster than the adaptation gain, γ, is able to demand increases in the WOB.…”

“…Key elements of this drilling efficiency program included vibration modeling and optimization of the bottom hole assembly (BHA) configuration [25][26][27][28] , bit redesign and depth of cut control elements [29][30][31][32] , use of larger diameter drill pipe 33 , and field trials of an active damping top-drive torque control system 34 . In addition, a real-time drilling parameter optimization system was developed to continuously monitor the Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) while drilling 35,36 .…”
